Supporting Caregivers & Families Affected by Domestic Violence

Description

This two-session, online training is designed to support domestic violence (DV) advocates and mental health therapists working with families, in community and residential DV program settings. In this training, we explore ways to engage and support caregivers affected by intimate partner violence in their parenting role. Practical strategies and activities will be shared to enhance parenting capacities and strengthen bonds between parents and their children affected by domestic violence. We will use caregiver-child-family scenarios to illustrate and apply learning to practice. The training will draw on two key resources that are available online:

Objectives

  • Explore ways to engage and support caregivers affected by intimate partner violence to strengthen their parenting capacities

  • Add to your toolbox of activities for caregivers and their children (from birth through age 18) to increase joy, resilience, and bonding between family members affected by domestic violence

  • Apply a healing-centered, developmentally sensitive, and trauma-informed approach to working with caregivers and their families


Facilitator

Susan Jans Blumenfeld, MSW, LCSW, is the former Director of Training and TA on Children,
Families and Domestic Violence with the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma and
Mental Health (2003-2021). She provides training and consultation nationally to support
organizations serving children, caregivers, and families affected by interpersonal violence and
trauma. Ms. Blumenfeld is a licensed clinical social worker in Illinois with more than 40 years of
clinical social work practice and leadership in child and family mental health. She has dedicated her career to developing more responsive community-based services and systems to support healing and resilience with individuals and families affected by interpersonal violence and trauma. Ms. Blumenfeld has been partnering with the Children’s Capacity Building Project of the New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence since its beginning in 2014. She is pleased and honored to be offering this online training!
