A training designed to educate our Programs on Active Shooters

Description:

An active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined area. Active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. This course also covers those who use unconventional weapons such as explosives and blunt and edged weapons.

This course will focus on how to be prepared and gain the skills needed to prevent, recognize and increase your ability to survive during an active shooter incident. This course will provide details on what behaviors to look for and whom to contact to prevent an active shooter incident. You will also learn how to make educated life-saving decisions regarding which actions to take during an active shooter incident. This course will cover whom to notify and in what order while the event is ongoing. We will also cover what to do after the event

This course provides guidance to individuals, including managers and employees, so that they can prepare to respond to an active shooter event.

Course Objectives:

  • Upon completing this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe actions to take when confronted with an active shooter and responding law enforcement officials.

  • Recognize potential workplace violence indicators.

  • Describe actions to take to prevent and prepare for potential active shooter incidents.

  • Describe how to manage the consequences of an active shooter incident.

About Your Facilitator

Quintin D McShan retired as a 35-year veteran of law enforcement. He specializes, as a
subject matter expert in domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. He has been an
expert witness in the New Mexico District Courts and before the New Mexico Legislature.
He has taught at the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Academy, the New Mexico State Police
Academy, and the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy. He has also taught individual
agencies, in every part of New Mexico. He has created many lesson plans and is recognized
as a master instructor by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy. He has drafted
successful domestic violence legislation on orders of protection for, the New Mexico
Legislature.
