Financial abuse occurs in 99 percent of domestic violence cases.
Tactics abusers commonly use include denying survivors access to money, ruining their credit by stealing their identity or harassing them at work so they lose their jobs. Without resources of their own, survivors are often unable to care for themselves and their families, unable to find employment and housing or to save for the future. Skyrocketing poverty rates make the financial empowerment of domestic violence survivors a crucial issue in the state of New Mexico.
Realizing how important these services are, NMCADV pursued grant funding through the Allstate Foundation Moving Ahead Grant Program to provide financial empowerment services for domestic violence survivors. These funds are currently being used by domestic violence advocates to provide financial literacy education, matched savings programs, and credit repair services. This program has shown great success with almost all participants meeting or exceeding their goals, and a few even saving enough money for a down payment on a home for their family.
The Allstate Foundation Moving Ahead Curriculum (formerly Purple Purse) is the longest running national campaign focused on domestic violence through a proven solution: financial empowerment services for survivors. The Allstate Foundation offers a free comprehensive financial literacy tool designed specifically for survivors.
